A Traditional Catalan Dessert: PANELLETS

Panellets literally means “little breads” in Catalan. They are one of Catalonia’s best-loved traditional dessert. They are little almond cakes served on All Saint’s Day.

Their history dates back to the XVIII century when they were cooked to be shared as blessed food. On All Saint's Day, the person in charge of ringing the church bells had to stay up all night clanging on them so that nobody could forget to pray for the souls of the dead. At midnight, the villagers used to walk to church and share dry fruits, biscuits, sweets and wine with them. This is the origin of “La Castanyada”, the Catalan version of All Saint’s Day. People offer panellets and roasted chestnuts to each other.

Ingredients

To make the pastry we need:

  • 500 g chopped almonds

To fill and decorate the Panellet:

  • 250 g pine nuts

  • 250 g chopped almonds

  • 250 g chopped coconut

  • 1 egg

  4. Mash the potatoes

  5. Mix the chopped almonds with the sugar and the eggs.

  6. Mix this paste with the potatoes. Mix all the ingredients into a paste.

  7. Add some grated lemon peel.

  8. Take some pastry and make a little ball.

  9. Immerse the balls into the beat egg.

  10. Coat the balls in chopped almonds and pine nuts

You can make panellets with coconut, chocolate, pine nuts... The most famous are the panellets de pinyons or pine nut panellets.

They are very expensive.

It’s typical for children to make them at school too.
